Pod Machines
Pod Machines are all about convenience. They allow you to quickly make coffee, generally without having to interact much with the machine, so you are free to do other things. They also are very easy to clean up.
A word of caution: all pod machines all have some drawbacks:
-They produce a lot of plastic waste. Please seek out compostable pods!
-Many users complain that the coffee is not hot enough. This means that the machine doesn’t make the water hot enough to fully brew the coffee. Also, the coffee is pre-ground, which means flavor has been lost over time, and there is a risk of staleness.
-The cups are generally pretty small when optimally brewed. Each pod holds 9-12 grams of coffee grounds, which is a stretch for more than 6 ounces of coffee.
-In the long run, pods are not economical because each serving is much more expensive than buying a bag of similar coffee. For example, Dunkin Donuts coffee costs more than twice as much per ounce in K-Cups than it does in a 12 ounce bag.
Pod Machine Recommendations:
Our budget pick is the K-Mini. This tiny brewer is perfect for a dorm desk.
The K-Supreme upgrades the heating technology, and adds programability and a larger water reservoir.
K-Duo Plus offers the ability to brew with regular ground coffee if you would like the option to make a whole pot without an additional machine. This could be an advantage if you are getting into coffee and may graduate to a drip machine later.
